I Know Very Well, But Still...

Serigraphs
10"x20" each
(2014)
In classical psychoanalysis, a fetish is understood as a process to cope with castration anxiety. Face to face with difference in genitalia, the male fixates on another body part or object in order to disavow the existence of the vagina---and therefore lack of a penis. To fetishize is an act of self-preservation, and the mental acrobatics of "I know very well, but still..." are a means to stave off the abject.

I (and apparently many other long-haired folks) have a habit of placing my hair on the wall in the shower. It began as an automatic habit, but as hair piled on top of hair I began to notice shapes within the abstract lines. I thought they were beautiful. My flatmates thought they were disgusting. This series is a dual exploration of the liminal space between beauty and the abject, as well as the subjective view from viewer to viewer in terms of visceral reaction and imagery seen.

There is no specific viewing orientation for any of the drawings.

Green Is Not a Creative Color [Imagination series]

Serigraphs
22"x30" each, except The banana meant to placate the gibbon (11"x30")
(2014-Ongoing)
This series explores text's capacity for image creation by allowing subjective imagery to be made in each viewer's mind. It is a sort of mental exercise, with each work functioning slightly differently from the next and influencing the way each piece is understood.
