ALEX CU UNJIENG

Visual artist, printmaker, curator

I am a woman and an immigrant. The relevance of these two details in what I make and do cannot be underestimated.

As a woman, my beliefs are deeply rooted within the feminist struggle, and are influenced by its trials, victories, and setbacks. As an immigrant, I have experienced, over and over again, the cultural differences between the two places I now call home. My work is influenced by a constant negotiation of identity, both culturally and as a physical embodiment in a space.

The process of making art gives me critical distance to examine and challenge how the world around me is understood, seen, and known. Because of this, I am also drawn to the larger question of how and where ideologies are made, evolved, and spread within---and among--- societies. To explore this, I utilize multiple media, predominantly printmaking techniques, as well as photography, and often incorporate the use of multiplicity and humour in my work.
